Check out five key features in Blender 4.3
The release of Blender 4.3 marks another important milestone in the development of Blender. Blender 4.3 is one of the most comprehensive redesigns, including significant enhancements throughout and a complete reimagining of Grease Pencil. In addition to building on the creative advancements of Blender 4.0, this release expands its possibilities with improved performance and streamlined workflows. Here are some of Blender 4.3’s key features that caught our attention.
Let’s discuss this with iRender in this blog!
Grease Pencil
Blender 4.3 introduces significant updates and improvements to the Grease Pencil tool, making it even more powerful for 2D and 3D animation. While the primary goal of the initial release is to bring the upgraded toolset up to feature parity with Blender 4.2, there are several new features at the same time.
The most important is that Blender’s procedural modeling, scene layout, simulation system, and Geometry Nodes are now compatible with Grease Pencil. As a result, Grease Pencil objects can be altered using Geometry Nodes; “many” of the current nodes that handle curves have been modified to handle Grease Pencil data.
Geometry Nodes
With strong new features that increase its procedural capabilities, Geometry Nodes keeps evolving. While Grease Pencil integration helps to bridge the gap between 2D and 3D workflows, the addition of the For Each Element zone creates additional opportunities for intricate geometry manipulation.
For Each Element Zone
Using this zone is great for many use-cases that were impossible or very complex.
A significant addition to the procedural toolkit:
- Evaluate nodes for every point, face, or edge independently
- Join results into new geometries or attributes
- Enhanced control over procedural operations
- Optimized performance for complex operations
Grease Pencil Integration
The integration with Grease Pencil marks a revolutionary step forward for hybrid workflows:
- Direct access to layers, curves, and control points
- Seamless conversion between Grease Pencil and curve data types
- Preserved attributes and materials during conversion
- Enhanced debugging capabilities with new naming system
Eevee and Cycles
Although Blender’s real-time render engine, Eevee, received a significant makeover in the previous release with the introduction of “Eevee Next,” Blender 4.3 offers more improvements.
The most significant is that Eevee now allows light linking, which improves creative control over lighting effects by allowing light sources to be configured to exclusively influence particular objects in a scene.
Shadow linking allows you to control which objects in the scene cast the light-created shadows, and it supports both emissive materials and ordinary lights. With the update, Eevee is now compatible with Cycles, Blender’s primary production renderer, which was enhanced to allow light linking in Blender 4.0.
Cycles itself gets support for new phase functions in Blender’s Volume Scatter node, traditionally used to add effects like fog or smoke to a scene. Each is designed for a certain kind of scattering that occurs in the real world: Rayleigh scattering is utilized for skies and ocean surfaces, while the Fourier-Forand function simulates underwater haze.
Rendering & Shading Enhancements
The rendering pipeline continues to evolve with material and shading improvements, especially in metallics and volume scattering.
New Metallic BSDF
A dedicated node for metallic materials that bridges artistic control and physical accuracy:
- F82 Tint Conductor Fresnel approximation
- Full Conductor Fresnel with IOR and Extinction coefficients
- Improved accuracy for real-world metal materials
- Seamless compatibility between Cycles and EEVEE
New Volume Scattering Phase Functions
The Volume Scattering node now supports more phase functions in addition to Henyey-Greenstein, which make it much more versatile and better suited for more tasks.
Sculpt Mode
When sculpting or painting models, Blender 4.3 also modifies the brush management workflow.
Brush sets can now be shared among teams or reused across projects more easily because they are kept in distinct asset libraries rather than the main.blend scene file.
When working in Sculpt Mode, a brush asset shelf that displays across the foot of the 3D Viewport and Image Editor allows you to choose brushes instead of using the toolbar.
Conclusion
The new features of Blender 4.3 provide significant advantages for users by enhancing performance, streamlining workflows, and expanding creative possibilities. Whether through improved rendering capabilities, advanced modeling tools, or better integration of animation techniques, Blender 4.3 aims to empower its users to create more dynamic and impactful visual content.
