Recently, Otoy has unveiled Octane 2022, the next major set of updates to the GPU production renderer, with the release of OctaneRender 2022.1 XB0, the first experimental build of the CUDA edition. Interestingly, some major changes include a new photon tracing kernel, making rendering caustics “about 1000x faster”, a new layered ubermaterial based on Autodesk’s Standard Surface specification, and better handling of volumes.

As we all know, Octane has various ways of layering textures and materials together to form complex looks and the purpose of this article is to walk you through how to use the most common ones by texturing a sci-fi crate. From the first and second parts, we have gone through almost all the steps from creating basic setups, Base Texture and Masking Strategies, etc. Now let’s come to the final part, which will guide you through Screen and Label and then see the final look of our sci-fi crate.

From the first part, we have covered some overall Setup of how the C4D file is constructed and pointed out where the assets originate from and Base Texture including building a Composite Material and set up a procedural mask using a Saw Wave, Gradient and Mix Texture node to tell Octane where to apply two different scratch masks. We’ll also be using a Dirt Node to apply some edge wear, touching on grouping nodes to clean up the node graph. Finally, we reused our procedural mask to restrict a rubber material to the bottom. Now let’s come to the next part of this step though, which will continue with Masking Strategies, Handles, and Top Bumps.
