How to Fix Render Crash and Slow Performance in Maya V-Ray?

Maya V-Ray is a powerful duo for 3D design and photorealistic rendering. But working with it can be frustrating when your renders suddenly crash and take longer than expected. Let’s take a look at why Maya and V-Ray render crash and slow performance, as well as some potential solutions to get your workflow back on track.

Why Maya V-Ray render crash and slow down?

Here are 5 common reasons why your Maya V-Ray renders crash or slow down.

  • Outdated drivers
  • Incorrect V-Ray settings
  • Software version conflicts
  • Hardware limitations
  • Too complex scenes

First, you should identify which issue is affecting your project and apply the following methods to fix it effectively.

Update the latest NVIDIA driver

Newer versions of Maya V-Ray are usually more compatible with the latest GPU drivers, so if you haven’t updated your drivers in a while, now is the time to do it.

How to update:

  • Download and install the latest driver from the official NVIDIA website
  • Restart your system after installation.

If you’re using an iRender server:

  • Go to the X drive on your remote machine
  • Open NVIDIA RTX 4090 DRIVER > Studio
  • Choose the latest driver by Date Modified
  • Install it, restart the machine, and reconnect

Note: New machines at iRender usually come with the latest drivers, but older ones may require manual updates. Many customers have fixed performance issues this way.

Check render settings

V-Ray already supports GPU rendering, so setting GPU rendering to replace both CPU and GPU option will help improve performance.

  • Navigate to Render Settings window and select V-Ray GPU as the engine.
  • Go to V-Ray > Renderer > Engine tab. From the drop-down menu, select V-Ray GPU.
  • You will see a list of supported devices on your computer. Select all available GPUs.

Note: On systems with multiple GPUs, you should use one GPU for display, while the remaining GPU devices are used for rendering. Otherwise, rendering may slow down the user interface. On the other hand, on computers with only one GPU, you can enable Low GPU thread priority.

And remember that some V-Ray features are only partially supported on V-Ray GPU. Unsupported features or parameters will be hidden from the interface when V-Ray is the renderer.

Update V-Ray license

If you’re experiencing V-Ray crashes when rendering in Maya, especially with V-Ray 7, the issue may come from an outdated license. Chaos Group released a license update in January 2025, which is required to keep V-Ray rendering stable. Contact Chaos Group and install the latest license update to fix this crash.

Reduce CPU core usage in Maya

Another way to fix Maya crashing during rendering is to reduce the number of CPU cores it uses. In most cases, this will work.

  • Open Task Manager and navigate to the Details tab

  • Locate maya.exe, right-click on it and select Set affinity

  • The pop-up processor affinity windows appear, with all CPU cores of your machine checked.

  • Uncheck a few CPU cores and try rendering in Maya again. If Maya crashes again, reduce a few more CPU cores and try again.

Simplify scene complexity

Maya V-Ray can sometimes crash and slow down if your scene is too complex. You can reduce the size of your scene by reducing the number of polygons or using lower-resolution textures. IPR has a ‘Resize textures for GPU’ option that you can use to automatically resize textures during GPU rendering.

Use iRender render farm to speed up your Maya V-Ray projects

If your local workstation still struggles with heavy scenes, a practical solution is to use a cloud render farm. iRender render farm is designed to accelerate demanding projects, giving you access to powerful GPU servers that can handle Maya V-Ray with ease. By moving your renders to iRender, you can cut down render time, avoid crashes, and focus more on the creative side of your work.

All servers are equipped with:

  • AMD Ryzen™ Threadripper™ PRO 3955WX (3.9-4.2GHz) or
  • AMD Ryzen™ Threadripper™ PRO 5975WX (3.6-4.5GHz)
  • (1/2/4/6/8x) – RTX 3090/4090
  • 256GB RAM
  • 2TB NVMe SSDs
