Can You Render Houdini Indie on a Render Farm? What the Rules Actually Say

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY // HOUDINI INDIE ON RENDER FARMS

  • Pipeline Mixing Restrictions: Traditional SaaS upload-and-render farms run commercial licenses and cannot process .hiplc files without violating SideFX license agreements.
  • Compliant Cloud Solution: Renting a dedicated remote workstation (IaaS) allows artists to log into their own SideFX Indie account, keeping files within a private, fully compliant environment.
  • Batch Render Limits: Each Indie subscription includes 3 free Houdini Engine Indie licenses, capping headless external batch rendering at 3 nodes simultaneously.
  • No Resolution Caps: Contrary to common myths, SideFX removed all render resolution limits for Houdini Indie in version 18.0.416, unlocking native 4K and 8K output.

Rendering Houdini Indie projects on cloud infrastructure often creates confusion due to strict licensing terms set by SideFX. Many 3D artists submit their .hiplc scene files to automated render farms only to face instant project rejections or technical errors. Understanding how SideFX distinguishes between commercial and Indie pipelines is essential for staying compliant while meeting tight production deadlines.

This guide examines the official licensing rules for Houdini Indie, explains why managed render farms cannot accept Indie files, and details how to set up a fully compliant workflow using dedicated rented hardware.

Short answer: yes, but not on every kind of farm

You cannot send a Houdini Indie file to just any render farm. The reason comes down to how SideFX structures its software licenses:

  • SaaS (Upload-and-Render) Farms: These farms run commercial Houdini licenses (.hip). SideFX rules strictly prohibit mixing Indie files (.hiplc) into commercial pipelines. Because of this, managed render farms cannot process your .hiplc files on their main nodes.
  • Dedicated Rented Cloud Machines (IaaS): On a rented remote workstation, you have full administrative control. You install Houdini, log into your own SideFX account, and use your own Indie license. Because you are using your own software allocation without mixing pipelines, this setup aligns with SideFX guidelines.

Note: Licensing rules can change over time. Always double-check current terms directly on the SideFX website or consult SideFX support if you have specific questions about your studio setup.

What the Indie licence allows, in SideFX's own words

SideFX designed Houdini Indie to give solo artists and small studios access to the full Houdini FX toolset at a low price (currently around $299/year, or $449 for two years; check sidefx.com/buy for current pricing). It is a limited commercial licence with these conditions:

  1. Revenue and funding limits: Your organisation’s annual gross revenue must stay under $100,000 USD, and it must have received less than $1,000,000 USD in funding in the last 24 months. Once you no longer meet these criteria, you must buy full commercial licences. This applies regardless of whether your revenue comes from using Houdini.
  2. Licence cap: You may buy up to 3 Houdini Indie licences and 3 Houdini Engine Indie licences. Each Indie purchase also includes a second licence for another computer or a dual-boot system, but both are restricted to a single artist.
  3. Separate file formats and pipeline: Indie saves scenes and digital assets in its own formats (.hiplc and .hdalc). Indie cannot be used in the same pipeline as commercial versions of Houdini, so you can’t exchange scenes and assets with them.
  4. Freelance work: If you are paid to produce content for an organisation, you may share only final renders with it. Sharing scene files or digital assets requires both you and that organisation to hold commercial licences, unless the organisation also qualifies for Indie.
  5. No resolution limits: Older versions capped render resolution (1080p, later 4K x 4K). The image-sequence restriction was removed in Houdini 18.0.416, and there are now no resolution restrictions for images rendered with Indie and its supported third-party renderers. Any images you sell must still respect the Indie licence’s commercial limits.

Why most render farms turn down .hiplc files

If you upload a .hiplc file to a standard render farm, the system will usually reject it right away.

Commercial render farms use expensive Houdini FX licenses. If they open an Indie .hiplc file on a commercial system, SideFX blocks the session or forces it into Indie mode. SideFX sets this strict rule so large studios cannot use cheap Indie files in big commercial projects.

A few render farms do offer separate Indie nodes, but they are hard to find. On top of that, some renderer plugins for Houdini Indie disable key export features (like .orbx output in Octane), which stops automated cloud farms from processing your scene properly.

Engine Indie: the licence that does the batch work

Every Houdini Indie subscription comes with up to 3 complimentary Houdini Engine Indie licenses. Houdini Engine Indie runs without a graphical interface (GUI). It is built specifically for headless command-line rendering (hython, hbatch) and simulation caching.

Because each active rendering task requires one Engine license, your Indie account can support a maximum of 3 external batch render nodes running simultaneously alongside your main workstation.

Important: Do not attempt to install commercial Houdini Engine licenses (such as those meant for Unreal Engine or Unity) to run Indie files. Commercial engine licenses will fail to read .hdalc assets or .hiplc scenes.

Using Indie on a rented cloud machine

Because you cannot use automated SaaS farms easily, renting a full cloud workstation (IaaS) is the most straightforward route for rendering heavy scenes.

Method 1: Single Powerful Machine (SideFX Login)

SideFX uses a cloud-based license system (SideFX Login). You can install Houdini Indie on a rented cloud machine and log in with your credentials.

SideFX rules allow you to install your license on multiple computers, but you can only use it on one machine at a time. Before launching Houdini on your rented cloud server, close Houdini on your local desktop or log out through the Houdini License Administrator.

Method 2: Batch Rendering Across 3 Nodes

If you want to render across multiple cloud nodes, assign your 3 free Engine Indie licenses to those machines for headless rendering. This allows you to split frame ranges across up to 3 remote servers.

Understanding “Network and Cloud Servers”

SideFX documentation states: “Network and Cloud servers are not available for use with Indie.”

This phrase specifically refers to floating network license servers (where a central server dynamically leases floating seats to dozens of local render nodes over a private network). It does not forbid you from logging into your single-seat user license on a rented server. However, if your studio setup involves complex virtual networks, contact SideFX support for clarification.

Step 4: run the full job without babysitting it

Navigating licensing terms can be tricky when deadline pressure hits. Here is a clear summary of which render setups are fully supported under your Houdini Indie license and where the pipeline restrictions apply:

Setup Method Required License Compliant Notes
Local Workstation Houdini Indie Yes Full GUI, no resolution limits.
Rented Cloud Workstation Houdini Indie (SideFX Login) Yes One active session at a time. Log out on your local machine first.
Batch Render Nodes Engine Indie Yes

Scaling Your Indie Workflow with iRender’s Multi-GPU Cloud Workstations

Instead of splitting your project across multiple separate nodes and hitting the 3 Engine Indie license limit, the most efficient strategy for an artist is to scale up on a single high-performance multi-GPU system.

iRender offers dedicated remote server rentals (IaaS) that solve both licensing compliance and rendering speed in one setup:

  • Full Admin Access: You get root administrative rights to install your exact version of Houdini Indie, third-party renderers, and custom plugins. Logging directly into your own SideFX account on a private server ensures your .hiplc files remain inside a dedicated Indie pipeline that fully complies with SideFX terms.
  • High-Density Multi-GPU Configurations: Rather than consuming all 3 Engine Indie licenses across three separate machines, you can run a single workstation equipped with 4x RTX 5090 (32GB GDDR7 VRAM) or 8x RTX 4090 (24GB VRAM) nodes.
  • Maximum Renderer Performance: Modern render engines like Karma XPU and Redshift scale exceptionally well across multiple GPUs inside a single host. You get the rendering power of a traditional multi-node farm while using only one Houdini Indie license.
  • Tier 3 Data Center Infrastructure: Workstations run on AMD Threadripper PRO CPUs, 256GB RAM, fast NVMe drives, and high-speed private networking, supported by the free iRender Drive storage transfer tool.

FAQ

  1. Can I use Houdini Indie on a render farm?

You cannot use standard SaaS upload-and-render farms that run commercial Houdini licenses because SideFX prohibits mixing Indie files (.hiplc) into commercial pipelines. However, you can render on rented dedicated workstations (IaaS) by installing Houdini and logging into your own SideFX Indie account.

2. Does Houdini Indie have a render resolution limit?

No. SideFX removed all resolution caps and frame sequence limits in Houdini 18.0.416. You can render animations and stills at full native resolution, including 4K, 8K, and beyond.

3. How many render nodes can I run with Houdini Indie?

Each Houdini Indie subscription includes up to 3 complimentary Houdini Engine Indie licenses. Because command-line batch rendering requires one Engine license per active node, you can run up to 3 dedicated render nodes at the same time alongside your primary workstation.

4. Which third-party renderers are supported with Houdini Indie on rented cloud hardware? Most major third-party renderers, including Redshift, Karma XPU, Arnold, V-Ray, and Octane, are fully supported. Since you have root administrative access on a dedicated IaaS workstation, you can install your preferred render engines and activate your own third-party Indie or floating licenses directly.

5. Do I need a separate Engine license if I render on a single multi-GPU workstation? No. If you launch rendering through the interactive Houdini GUI or use Karma XPU/Redshift on a single multi-GPU system (such as an 8x RTX 4090 or 4x RTX 5090 node), it consumes only your primary Houdini Indie license seat while utilizing all installed GPUs simultaneously.
