Corrupt scene file
You can try revert to a previous version of the file, or import the scene into a new empty Maya scene.
If there are some specific corrupted elements in the scene, try using Optimize Scene Size tool to remove those nodes. Please note that this operation cannot be undone. You should save a backup copy of the file before using this tool.
To avoid data loss due to corrupted files in future, you can use Auto Save in case that no versions of the scene file have been saved.
Missing/unloaded/outdated Plug-in data
Missing or unloaded or outdated plug-ins can be a reason for the crashing in Maya.

- If the file is in ASCII format, try opening it in a text document and remove the line where it requires the plug-in.

You can use explorer to navigate to the following directory (for Windows):
C:\Users\<username>\My Documents\Maya\<version>\
Note: If copy/pasting the path from above, edit USERNAME (custom username for the computer/account) and VERSION (version of the software in use) as appropriate.
Find the prefs folder and rename it to prefsOld.
Now you can restart Maya. If prompted to, select the option to Create Default Preferences.
