Exploring New Updates in Redshift 3.6 with iRender
Good news for the 3D artist community, Maxon has released Redshift 3.6, the latest version of its production renderer. This is a major update, adding a new non-photorealistic rendering system, overhauling volume rendering and area lighting, and introducing official support for rendering on AMD GPUs. This new updated version will help users get the best experience for their complex projects.
Redshift improves non-photorealistic rendering capabilities

Redshift 3.6 includes a full-fledged non-photorealistic rendering (NPR) system based on the MatCap shader node introduced in Redshift 3.5.17 last year. Its components include a new Toon Material node for shading vertical lines, a Contour shader for drawing contours, and a Tonemap Pattern shader for halftone shading and other effects.
Improve volume shading and support for displacement
The volume sampling and shading technology in Redshift has also been improved with this release. The Standard Volume shader may now be controlled by shader nodes, making it easier to add fine details, and it is now compatible with global environmental fog. Furthermore, the new Jendersie-d’Eon method for estimating light scattering by atmospheric particles is intended to produce more realistic renderings of clouds and fog.
The update also adds support for volume displacement, allowing volumes to be changed by manipulating the input grid data. Other changes include alpha masking for large-area lights, which allows you to create gobos with textures. Mesh lights have been updated to follow visibility and light linking rules, bringing them in line with other light sources. Both sampling and AOV processing have been improved.
Updates to area lighting, particle rendering, and official support for AMD GPUs

Other updates include support for additive particle rendering and ray level output in the State shader. Last but not least, HIP now supports OSL (Open Shading Language), which means that Redshift is now officially supported on AMD GPUs after two years of public preview. Previously, the renderer was only officially supported by NVIDIA and Apple Silicon hardware.
System Requirement and Price
Redshift 3.6 is compatible with Windows 10 and above, glibc 2.17 and higher on Linux, and macOS 12.6 and higher. Renderer integration plugins are compatible with 3ds Max 2018, Blender 2.83, Cinema 4D R21, Houdini 17.5 (18.0 on macOS), Katana 4.0v1, Maya 2018, and all of the products listed above. The software is available as a subscription, which costs $45 per month or $264 per year.
