vray

V-Ray is considered to be one of the best 3D rendering software on the market since it boasts high speed and high quality. Under the hood, V-Ray is a biased raytracer that can harness both a CPU and a GPU (RT) uses brute force and path tracing calculations. You can find it integrated into a vast array of 3D modeling suites.

On the one hand, this 3D rendering software is accessible enough that individual artists and the occasional 3D modeler can get great results out of it. On the other hand, V-Ray also has a comprehensive feature set, that is to say, professional teams can achieve fantastic quality with it. However, if you are aiming to push the envelope, success won’t come quickly with Vray since the advanced features have a steep learning curve.

V-Ray is the sort of 3D rendering software that fits every stage in the development of 3D artists. It’s suitable for beginners, but even seasoned professionals will get their money’s worth.

However, Mantra process still uses 100% CPU power and that’s the reason the artists often found it slow to meet their deadline. There is a clear trend these days to incorporate more and more GPU acceleration into 3D products. In the rendering space, the idea of offloading certain tasks to the GPU has been around for over a decade, but it’s only been in the past few years that you’ve seen massive leaps in performance, largely thanks to NVIDIA’s advances with their Ampere architecture and RT cores. In this article, I’ll show you prime examples which are some alternatives to render your Houdini projects in a faster way. I take my first deep dive into Redshift, V-Ray and Octane that are some of the main alternatives you can use for your Houdini projects.

When you need to position labels on complex surfaces, employ materials like RealCloth, or manage the seams and direction of a texture on your item, good UVs are vital. If your geometry lacks useful UVs, you can use the Unwrap UV tool to produce UV coordinates for your objects. You may control how UV coordinates are generated by selecting seams, charts, and directions. When you're pleased with a group of charts, press unwrap – you can then adjust the angle and scale of each chart to make them match.

Your render will be approximately twice as fast without doing anything to your settings and merely opening an old scene in V-Ray Next. The biggest reason for this is the new architecture of V-Ray GPU: instead of a mega-kernel architecture, V-Ray GPU now uses a multi-kernel architecture.

Furthermore, the new Hybrid Rendering mode (CPU + GPUs) in V-Ray 3.6 only works with CUDA mode, which requires NVIDIA graphics cards. Users using AMD will not get the embree acceleration because that’s an NVIDIA bonus. When the engine is set to V-Ray GPU with RTX enabled, V-Ray GPU uses the RT Cores in NVIDIA RTX GPUs. Render speed is primarily determined by the number of CUDA cores (the more the better) and the GPU’s clock speed.

V-Ray Next GPU scales very well with additional video cards. Looking just at the results of secondary cards, we can see that stacking a few of those will give fantastic rendering performance. It is almost perfect scaling from 1 -> 2 - > 3 GPUs. Specially, scaling from a second video card is still respectable - in the range of 83 to 93% improvement.
