How does Unreal Engine perform on RTX4090?

In a long time RTX3090 is still the best customer graphics card for Unreal Engine, because of its great amount of VRAM and the overall performance. With the release of RTX4090 in October 2022, we now have a new leap in the graphics card series. Let’s see how Unreal Engine performs on RTX4090 in this article, compared to the older RTX3090.

1. RTX4090 specification

Geforce RTX 4090 is a high class graphics card which was released in October 2022 by NVIDIA. The new 5 nm process, AD102 graphics processor and the DirectX 12 Ultimate enable the card support for hardware-raytracing, variable-rate shading and more.

Some other specification of RTX 4090: 16384 shading units, 512 texture mapping units, 176 ROPs, 512 tensor cores, 128 ray-tracing acceleration cores, 24GB of VRAM, base clock of 2235 MHz, which can be boosted up to 2520 MHz. Those specs will be very helpful when it comes to rendering or machine learning improvement.

The long existing kings in this field are always RTX 3090 and RTX 3090Ti. Let’s see the comparison of the with the new generation of GPUs

Moreover, let’s see some raw power improvement of RTX4090 like GPU clock speed, GPU memory speed and the floating-point performance compared to RTX3090.

The GPU clock speed could show you how fast the cores of a graphics processing unit (GPU) are. The function of these cores is to render graphics; therefore, the higher the GPU clock speed, the faster the processing. We can see that while RTX 3090 is just 1395MHz, RTX 4090 is 835MHz higher.

The GPU memory speed, one that determines the memory bandwidth, also shows a great leap, from 1219MHz to 1325MHz. That’s why the memory bandwidth of RTX 4090 is 82GB/s higher than that of RTX 3090.

The floating-point performance helps you determine the raw power of the GPU. And here, you can see a great improvement where RTX 4090 is 2.3 times higher than RTX 3090.

2. How does Unreal Engine perform on RTX4090?

Same with the result from many GPU-intensive programs like Redshift, Octane, Blender, Unreal Engine also performs so good on RTX4090.

The framerates of RTX4090 increase roughly 78% compared to RT3090Ti, and about 93% compared to RTX3090. It helps you to work a lot more in your scene at the same framerates if your virtual production is fixed at 30-60FPS.

Nvidia has removed NVLink support on this RTX4090. Therefore, users who want to use multi-GPUs for tasks like GPU Lightmass, path tracer will need to roll back to RTX3090. However, the performance of one RTX4090 is so great that you don’t even need multi-GPUs.

At iRender, we have receive many feedbacks from Unreal Engine users about how UE could be unstable while using NVLink. While Nvidia claims that NVLink could help double the available VRAM, it looks like it just makes both GPUs render the scene separately. And because Unreal Engine is working on one GPU only, when it works with two GPUs, it seems too much for UE to handle properly. Our Unreal Engine users often report  crashing while using two GPU with NVLink, or it does not use the total of 48GB VRAM at all. However, many of them report that if UE can use no more than 24GB, it will not crash. Or if the scene is intensive, RTX 4090 can handle it while RTX 3090 cannot.

This picture shows PugetBench for the head-to-head generation of RTX4000 series and RTX3000 series. Let’s take the result of RTX 4090 compared to RTX 3090Ti and RTX 3090. While RTX 3090Ti is just released a year ago, the speed of it is not much faster than RTX 3090. And now with the appearance of RTX 4090, it can easily help you put more geometry or effects on the screen than the two best graphics cards of RTX3000 series, while still maintaining your target FPS output. Right now, it’s no doubt that RTX4090 is one of the best GPUs for game development, Virtual Production, and Architectural Visualization.

3. iRender’s best option for Unreal Engine cloud rendering

iRender is always up to date with the newest technology. That explains our releasing of a new server 2x RTX4090s (4S) on 14th October 2022.

As results from the tests above, you can see that Unreal Engine performs really well in new generation of video cards, about 90% faster than RTX3090. iRender chooses to start with dual RTX 4090s (4S), so that Unreal Engine, especially UE 5 users could find the fastest and strongest workstation ever.

We are not only providing you the most powerful graphics card, but also the same level of hardware, such as AMD Ryzen Threadripper processor, 256 GB RAM, 2 TB of storage (NVMe SSD). A powerful processor is for low loading time, snappy viewport, 256GB of RAM is for huge projects, and 2TB of storage is for storing your renders.

With the price of $15 for 4S package, now you can experience the newest card and enjoy working smoothly in a customized pipeline like you have always done with your own PC.

Don’t hesitate to register right now to render on our new server 2x RTX4090s. You just need to update the latest NVIDIA studio driver to get the best out of it.

Through this article, we hope you can deeply understand Unreal Engine perform on RTX4090.  Besides, we are offering the promotion for new users.  For your first transaction within 24 hour since your registration, you will receive a 20% bonus.
