This feature release include Tone-mapping in toon, improved volume denoising, global light sampling support for light linking, increased OSL compatibility, an OpenVDB 11 update, and several bug fixes.

Toon tone-mapping

You can now control the hue and saturation of tonemapping in the toon shader. The toon shader has four additional parameters that complement the current value-based tonemapping parameters. The connected shader’s U coordinate controls direct light hue and V coordinate controls saturation, allowing textures like those below to map the toon shader’s response to colored illumination. These toon parameters include:

  • edge_tonemap_hue_saturation
  • silhouette_tonemap_hue_saturation
  • base_tonemap_hue_saturation
  • specular_tonemap_hue_saturation

Better Volume denoising

Denoising volume now gives better results. The improvements in how volume albedo is estimated allow the denoiser to keep more detail. Ringing artifacts when objects are viewed against an background are also reduced, and a new N_denoise AOV fixes many denoising artifacts that appear in low-AA renders.

Many-lights support for light linking

Global light sampling is now applied to each group of lights associated with a shape. This may boost rendering performance for scenes involving light linking. Using Global Light Sampling, the ALab scene now renders twice as quickly.

Improved Standard Hair on GPU

The GPU renderer allows the extra_depth parameter. This allows for accurate rendering of blond or bright-colored hair without increasing GI_specular_depth.

Improvements to the Arnold RenderView snapshots workflow

Snapshots now default to a folder based on the current scene name. You can choose a custom folder instead. This custom location will be saved with the scene and used instead of the default scene folder.

Snapshots can be moved to another folder. When you add a new snapshots folder or load a scene with a different snapshot folder, a relocate option appears, asking if you want to relocate the current snapshots.

A new Enable Snapshots Folder option that may be queried or changed using MEL or Python.
