How does Autodesk Arnold perform on RTX4090?

With the fast development of hardware, especially in GPU technology, RTX4090 came out at the end of 2022 and since then has received many tests for other render engines like Redshift, V-Ray, Octane, etc. Their results are impressive, promising a big leap in performance compared to other RTX3000 series. Today, in this article, we will compare RTX4090 to RTX3090, and let’s see how does Autodesk Arnold perform on RTX4090?

1. RTX4090 specification

Geforce RTX 4090 is a high class graphics card which was released on September 20th 2022 by NVIDIA. The new 5 nm process, AD102 graphics processor and the DirectX 12 Ultimate enable the card support for hardware-raytracing, variable-rate shading and more.

Some other specification of RTX 4090: 16384 shading units, 512 texture mapping units, 176 ROPs, 512 tensor cores, 128 ray-tracing acceleration cores, 24GB of VRAM, base clock of 2235 MHz, which can be boosted up to 2520 MHz. Those specs will be very helpful when it comes to rendering or machine learning improvement.

The long existing kings in this field are always RTX 3090 and RTX 3090Ti. Let’s see the comparison of the with the new generation of GPUs

Moreover, let’s see some raw power improvement of RTX4090 like GPU clock speed, GPU memory speed and the floating-point performance compared to RTX3090.

The GPU clock speed could show you how fast the cores of a graphics processing unit (GPU) are. The function of these cores is to render graphics; therefore, the higher the GPU clock speed, the faster the processing. We can see that while RTX 3090 is just 1395MHz, RTX 4090 is 835MHz higher.

The GPU memory speed, one that determines the memory bandwidth, also shows a great leap, from 1219MHz to 1325MHz. That’s why the memory bandwidth of RTX 4090 is 82GB/s higher than that of RTX 3090.

The floating-point performance helps you determine the raw power of the GPU. And here, you can see a great improvement where RTX 4090 is 2.3 times higher than RTX 3090.

2. How does Autodesk Arnold perform on RTX4090?

Same with the result from many GPU-intensive programs like Redshift, Blender, Arnold also performs so good on RTX4090.

Redshift and Blender only run about 70% faster when compared RTX4090 to RTX 3080Ti, and about 55% faster if you compare RTX4090 to RTX 3090Ti.

The latest card RTX4090 does a little bit better when rendering in Arnold, the speed is 80% and 64% faster than RTX 3080Ti and RTX 3090Ti relatively.

There is a comparison from TechGage which features RTX 3090. They render two scenes “Jaguar E-Type” and “Sophie” with many graphics card, using Arnold for Maya MtoA 5.2.1.1.

In both scenes, RTX 4090 renders faster than RTX 3090 about 75-78%. It’s not quite double like it could do with Octane or V-Ray, judging from the fact that it couldn’t with RTX 3080Ti. However, it’s still a massive reduction in render time.

There is one thing about Arnold that iRender has learned from many users of ours, is that Arnold doesn’t scale up good when it comes to multi-GPUs rendering. They have told me that Arnold doesn’t know how to work with GPU or multi-GPUs properly, or it can only work on a system having NVLink.

It could come from the fact that Arnold is the renderer used for film production, with a very high quality. The project in Arnold could be so complicated that your GPU is not strong enough to proceed. That’s why Arnold will behave weird, or cannot render. Some suggestions for that are optimizing your scene, using a different graphics card (Autodesk suggests NVIDIA Quadro RTX 6000 24GB or above), or using NVLink.

Nvidia has removed NVLink support on this RTX4090. Therefore, users who want to use NVLink will need to roll back to RTX3090. It’s not really 100% that using one GPU RTX4090 or using NVLink for two RTX3090s is better, we suggest that you can try both and decide by yourself. And please note that NVLink can only be used on a system of two consumer card, which means that you can only use NVLink with maximum two RTX3090s.

3. iRender’s best option for Arnold rendering

iRender is always up to date with the newest technology. That explains our releasing of RTX4090 packages from 2022.

As results from the tests above, you can see that Arnold performs really well in new generation of video cards, about 70-80% faster than RTX3000. iRender now has from single to multi RTX4090s server packages, and even dual RTX3090s with NVLink.

We are not only providing you the most powerful graphics card, but also the same level of hardware, such as AMD Ryzen Threadripper processor, 256 GB RAM, 2 TB of storage (NVMe SSD). A powerful processor is for low loading time, snappy viewport, 256GB of RAM is for huge projects, and 2TB of storage is for storing your renders.

Let’s watch a video of a Maya and Arnold 2023 project rendered on our multi RTX 3090s server. The project is inspired by the tragedy of king Midas, who asked the gods for the power of turning into gold anything he touched, but then by accident turned his own daughter into a golden statue.

It’s about more than 1000 frames, with AA Samples: 3, Adaptive samples: max samples: 10, using interactive grooming splines, two cameras.

You can always register now and experience our newest card RTX4090 or RTX3090, and enjoy working smoothly in a customized pipeline like you have always done with your own PC.

We are offering the promotion for new users.  For your first transaction within 24 hour since your registration, you will receive a 100% bonus. Contact us via Whatsapp (+84) 916806116 for more support.

Happy rendering!
