Tips for Better Lighting in Blender with iRender

The creative possibilities in Blender are endless, and diving into new projects is a lot of fun. Unfortunately there are also those annoying technical issues and tasks which take so much time to manage, when you’d rather be focusing your attention on the piece you are creating. The difference between a boring image and an outstanding image can often just come down to the lighting. But lighting is such a complex and rarely discussed topic, that a lot of artists are left to just guesswork.

But do not worry. Our today’s article will share  some of the common mistakes in lighting, and share with you some tips for better lighting in Blender.

1. Change the Shadow Size

The size of your lamp has a significant impact on the final render! Soft shadows can create a calm atmosphere or imitate overcast lighting, whereas sharp shadows can bring out the detail or imitating harsh daylight.

Changing the size of the lamp can complete change the mood of your scene. So experiment with it for better lighting in Blender!

2. Common mistakes

Trying to light everything is one of the most common mistakes that beginners make. Overlighting a scene eliminates the shadows, which play an important role! Because without them, geometry becomes completely flat (see the above example). So instead of fearing shadows. Consider how you can use shadows to reveal detail or make something of less importance. This tip will make better lighting in Blender for your project.

Sidenote: Don’t make the scene too dark either – that’s another common mistakes particularly in night time scenes

3. Use Color

Not only do colors send a strong emotional message to your viewers, but they’re also a fundamental part of life! Almost no light in real life is completely white (which oddly enough is the most used color for CG). Real light is measured in degrees Kelvin, which (few people know) can be directly be used in Cycles with the Blackbody node (Add>Converter>Blackbody).

4. Emphasize Your Subject

Lighting in Blender plays a huge role in what your viewer will focus on when they see the render. And if everything is lit the same, then nothing is important!

So look at your scene and decide what the subject is – then make sure it receives more light than the rest of the scene. Adding textures to your lighting can add an extra element of interest to your scene. This is sometimes referred to as the light throw, or implied lighting. Which is basically implying that something is happening outside of the frame, without actually showing it.

Animating the direction, position, size, strength or color can have a dramatic effect on the animation. It can be used to convey the passing of time, signify the moment a character makes a dramatic change or realization or bring something to attention. Consider how lighting can be used to tell the story of your next animation!

5. The Best Cloud Rendering Service for Blender

We hope this overview will help you choose a suitable package. As you may know, iRender provides a high performance and configurable server system for 3D rendering, AI Training, VR & AR, simulation, etc. With our server, you can install any software you need, add your license, and do whatever you like with your project. These tools above are no exception. Most tools for fluids are computationally expensive. Understanding that, we have different config and package compatible with them, from CPU to single GPU, dual and even multi-GPUs.

Let’s see rendering tests with Blender on server 2/4/6x RTX 3090 the latest NVIDIA CARD RTX 3090 with 24GB VRAM will help you reduce your render time very much at iRender:

Moreover, iRender has many more to offer.

  • Free and convenient transfering tool: iRender offers a powerful and free file transfer tool: Gpuhub Sync. With fast file transfer speed, large data capacity, and completely free. You can transfer all the necessary data into our Gpuhub Sync tool at any time without connecting to the server. The data will be automatically synchronized in the Z drive inside the server, ready for you to use.
  • Flexible price: You can always save from 20% to 40% with our Fixed Rental feature.
