Ways to reduce noises in a Houdini scene
Working with Houdini or any 3D software sometimes is not going well if you encounter noises in your scene. And to make it more appealing, reducing or removing noises is a must. In this article, let’s take a look at some ways you can reduce noises in a Houdini scene.
Ways to reduce noises in a Houdini scene
Reduce noisy default render
There are some ways to reduce or remove noisy default render. You can try one of the solutions or try them all.

- Turn on Direct image planes.
- Turn on Indirect image planes.
- Turn on SSS image planes.
- Turn on Direct Samples image plane.
- Turn on Indirect Samples image plane.

Reduce noisy motion blur, noisy depth of field, and/or edge aliasing
You can try increasing pixel samples, or checking alpha channel. Turn off “Allow Motion Blur” if it’s noisy motion blur, turn off “Enable Depth of Field” if it’s noisy depth of field.
Reduce noisy direct illumination
If it’s noisy direct reflections, you can check the Direct Reflect channel while making adjustments, or increase light samples, pixel samples.
If it’s noisy direct refractions, you can check the Direct Refract channel while making adjustments, or increase light samples, pixel samples.
If it’s noisy direct shadows, you can check the Direct Diffuse channel while making adjustments, or increase light samples, pixel samples.
Or you can try adjusting per-light sampling, Direct rays or Noise Level.
Reduce noisy indirect illumination
If it’s noisy indirect diffuse illumination, try checking the Indirect Diffuse channel while making adjustments, or increase the number of indirect samples, pixel samples.
If it’s noisy indirect reflections, try checking the Indirect Reflect channel while making adjustments, or increase the number of indirect samples, pixel samples.
If it’s noisy indirect refractions, try checking the Indirect Refract channel while making adjustments, or increase the number of indirect samples, pixel samples.
Or you can try adjusting Indirect rays or Indirect noise level.
Reduce noisy volumetric objects
Regarding Direct lighting, you should check the Direct Volume channel, or adjust Transparent samples and Volume Step Rate.
Regarding Indirect lighting, you should check the Indirect Volume channel, or adjust Indirect rays and Volume Step Rate.
Reduce noisy subsurface scattering
It depends on whether it’s Single scattering or Multiple scattering.
For Single scattering, you can check the SSS Single channel or adjust Single scattering quality on the shader.
For multiple scattering, you can check the SSS Multi channel or adjust Multi scattering quality on the shader.
Special cases
Sometimes, there’s only one object (or more) in your scene which is noisier than the rest. And if you want to get enough samples onto that object, the other will be over-sampled. This can occur in many different circumstances, but a common cause would be a refractive or reflective shader with high roughness values.
To avoid this over-sampling problem, you can add the sampling properties onto the object itself. This will mean that only the problem-case will receive more samples, and the others remain the same.
