What are the new features in Vantage 2.6?

Chaos has released an update for Vantage, its real-time ray tracing renderer designed for navigating vast V-Ray scenes in architectural visualization and visual effects projects. This new version brings innovative features that streamline workflow and improve the rendering experience.

The Vantage 2.6 update introduces a new Water Surface object, supports the V-Ray Clipper object, and enhances the workflow for materials and cameras. Let’s dive into the new features in this blog with iRender.

Vantage is a GPU-accelerated ray tracing renderer designed for real-time exploration of extensive production scenes. Launched in 2020, it was initially aimed at visualization, allowing users to navigate large V-Ray production environments in near-real time.

In 2023, Chaos expanded Vantage’s capabilities by incorporating support for rendering deforming meshes, such as animated characters, and began promoting it for use in visual effects (VFX) work.

Key changes in Vantage 2.6 include support for the V-Ray Clipper for creating cutaway renders.  Users can now utilize the V-Ray Clipper object to cut through geometry, enabling better analysis and visualization of 3D scenes, which is particularly useful in architectural projects.

There is also a newly introduced Water Surface object designed for generating animated water effects in scenes, featuring adjustable parameters for wave height, spacing, speed, and direction. This new feature enables users to generate highly realistic water effects, enhancing the visual appeal of scenes that include various types of water bodies.

Furthermore, this update incorporates compatibility with water textures from Chaos’s other products, such as the Phoenix Ocean Texture and the V-Ray Water Map for applications like Maya, SketchUp, Rhino, and Revit.

Vantage 2.6 enhances support for the V-Ray Material by introducing the SSS mode for Transparency, which is ideal for materials such as skin, wax, and marble, and the Stochastic mode for Opacity.

Additionally, users can now enable a wireframe overlay when viewing a scene in Clay mode. Enhancements to the material management system make it more intuitive and efficient for artists to apply and modify materials within their scenes.

The update simplifies camera management, as cameras are now treated as scene objects. This change allows them to be listed in the Outliner and displayed in the viewport with gizmos, enabling users to select and interactively manipulate them.

Furthermore, the virtual reality capabilities introduced in Vantage 2.5 have been expanded to include support for VR controllers in addition to VR headsets.
